Etymology

From ภูมิ (puum, “locality”) +‎ ลำเนา (“locality”); coined by Prince Narathip Phong Praphan (1891–1976) for the English legal term domicile. Compare Khmer ភូមិលំនៅ (phuumilumnɨw, “place of habitation”).
