[edit]From Sanskrit विस्तार (vistāra, “extension; elaborateness; detail”); probably via Old Khmer bistāra. Cognate with Modern Khmer ពិស្តារ (pɨhtaa). Compare Pali vitthāra, from which Thai วิตถาร (wít-tǎan) was derived.
