Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀟𑀼𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀤𑀺 (ḍubbadi), a Middle-Indo-Aryan metathesis of Prakrit 𑀩𑀼𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀢𑀺 (buḍḍati) (compare Sanskrit व्रुड् (vruḍ, sink)). Compare Hindustani ڈُوبْنَا (ḍūbnā) / डूबना (ḍūbnā), Marathi डुंबणे (ḍumbṇe), Punjabi ਡੁੱਬਣਾ (ḍubbaṇā) / ڈُبّݨا (ḍubbṇā), Nepali डुब्नु (ḍubnu), Maithili डुबब (ḍubab) / 𑒛𑒳𑒥𑒥 (ḍubaba), Odia ଡୁବିବା (ḍubibā), Bengali ডুবা (ḍuba), Assamese ডুবা (duba).
