Inherited from Prakrit *𑀔𑀺𑀁𑀘𑀇 (*khiṃcaï), 𑀔𑀁𑀘𑀇 (khaṃcaï, “to pull”), from a family of Prakrit words with "dragging" connotations of unknown further origin. Compare Bengali খেঁচা (khẽca), Hindustani کھینچنا / खींचना (khī̃cnā), Marathi खेचणे (kheċṇe), Punjabi کِھچّݨا / ਖਿੱਚਣਾ (khiccaṇā), and Marwari खंचणौ (khañcṇau).
