Inherited from Prakrit *𑀔𑀺𑀁𑀘𑀇 (*khiṃcaï), 𑀔𑀁𑀘𑀇 (khaṃcaï, “to pull”), from a family of Prakrit words with "dragging" connotations of unknown further origin. Compare Gujarati ખેંચવું (kheñcvũ), Hindi खींचना (khī̃cnā), Punjabi ਖਿੱਚਣਾ (khiccaṇā), Bengali খেঁচা (khẽca).
