    From Proto-Indo-Iranian *támHas, from Proto-Indo-European *témHos (darkness). Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬆𐬨𐬀𐬵 (təmah), Persian تم (tam, cataract), Lithuanian tamsà (darkness), Latin tenebra (darkness).
