From Proto-Indo-Iranian *támHsram (“darkness; dark night”), from Proto-Indo-European *témH-(e)s-ros (“darkness”), from *temH- (“to be dark”).
Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬄𐬚𐬭𐬀 (tąθra, “darkness”), Latin tenebrae, German finster (“dark, gloomy”). See also तमिस्रा (támisrā).
