Inherited from Prakrit 𑀕𑀠 (gaḍha), from Sanskrit *गृध (gṛdha, “fort”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás (“enclosure”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰ-ó-s, from *gʰerdʰ- (“to enclose”). Cognate to Gujarati ગઢ (gaḍh), Bengali গড় (goṛ).
