From Proto-Indo-Aryan *duẓgás, from Proto-Indo-European *dusgʷḿ̥s, from *dus- (“bad”) + *gʷem- (“to go”). By surface analysis, दुर्- (dur-, “badly, with difficulty”) + ग (ga, “going, moving”); literally, "difficult to approach".
