Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Ancient Greek κανών (kanṓn); compare Arabic قَانُون (qānūn), Hebrew קָנוֹן (qānôn). Doublet of ܟܢܘܼܢܬܵܐ (knuntā, rule, plumb line), ܩܲܢܝܵܐ (qanyā, pen), and ܩܲܢܝܼܬܵܐ (qanītā, canal).
