From Arabic قَنَاة (qanāh), itself borrowed from Aramaic קַנְיָא (qanəya, reed, cane, tube), from Akkadian 𒄀 (qanûm). Doublet of ܩܲܢܝܵܐ (qanyā, pen; reed).
