Etymology

Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish قومق (qovmaq), قوغمق (qoġmaq), from Proto-Turkic *kob- (“to follow, chase”). Cognate with Azerbaijani qovmaq, Bashkir ҡыуыу (qıwıw), Chuvash хума (huma), Kazakh қуу (quu), Kyrgyz куу (kuu), Southern Altai куу- (kuu-), Turkmen kowmak, Uzbek quvmoq.

1. (transitive) to drive away, chase away, expel, dismiss, to force someone or something to leave a place or organization

   Synonyms: اخراج ایتمك (ihrâc etmek), دفع ایتمك (defʼ etmek)

2. (transtive) to banish, exile, forban, expatriate, to send someone away from a place and forbid that person from returning

   Synonym: سوركون ایتمك (sürgün etmek)

3. (transitive) to pursue, chase, run after, go after, to follow urgently, originally with intent to capture, harm, or overtake

   Synonym: تعقیب ایتمك (tâʼkib etmek)

4. (transitive) to persevere in, persist in, to go on in pursuit of an undertaking, task, journey, or goal, even if hindered
