Inherited from Old Ukrainian єди́нъ (jedín), from Old East Slavic ѥди́нъ (jedínŭ), еди́нъ (edínŭ), from Proto-Slavic *edìnъ (one).

Compare with Subcarpathian Church Slavonic єдин (edin), Polish jeden, Ukrainian оди́н (odýn) (dialectal їде́н (jidén)).
