[edit]Unknown.[1] Has been suggested as from Φᾰ́ρος (Pháros, “Pharos”), the name of an island on which the lighthouse of Alexandria was located, possibly from Egyptian, as well as the name of that lighthouse. Alternately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰar- (“log, board, plank”).
