[edit]Learned borrowing from French hypertrophie,[1] a French-coined term adopted into Greek, equivalent to υπερ- (yper-, “over, hyper-”) + τροφ(ή) (trof(í), “food, nourishment”) + -ία (-ía). First attested 1856.[2]
