Template for link to the printed dictionary (pdf viewer at Anemi, Digital Library of Modern Greek Studies at University of Crete) by Στέφαντος Κουμανούδης (Stéfantos Koumanoúdis /stéfanos kumanúðis/) 1818‑1899, Greek archaeologist, who used to write down all the neologisms of his time (#Language Katharevousa) in newspapers, journals, books, school textbooks). He died before annotating or editing his notes, a work he intended with instructions for his firstborn son who also died. The editing was finally done by a younger son (Preface) with very little memory of verbal instructions by his late father.

Dates and abbreviations

[edit]

Koumanoudis wrote down the dates of attestation in his own abbreviated way:

  • 00 two numbers indicate 19th century. Example: 23 = 1823. Occasionally, for newspapers he added date and month.
Example: 30 Ιουν (Ιουνίου (Iouníou, of June) 95 (1895)
  • 700 three numbers starting with 7 indicate 18th century. Example: 795 = 1795

His abbreviations of authors, journals, are explained by the editor (his son, see his Preface) at abbreviation pages at the end of the second volume.

  • The authors' names alphabetically by surname, which is the second name: given name, surname.
  • The date-numbers under author-names are the publication dates of unnamed works. For some, it is easy to deduce the title by consulting a wikipedia article for the author.
  • asterisk * = the word was not a neologism, but with a different sense in ancient or other period of Greek.
  • plus sign + = a hybrid compound with Greek and non-Greek combining forms

His markings, his son notes at Preface, "were not always correct".

Language

[edit]

The language of the lemmata are Katharevousa of Koumanoudis' time.
His notes, also some comments -sometimes humorous- also in Katharevousa, as it was obligatory (even demoticists had to write in Katharevousa).
Note his spellings like ῬωσσοΕλληνικός p.891, vol.2 -modern ρωσσοελληνικός (rossoellinikós)- with capitals for both combining forms and Rho with δασεία (daseía, rough spirit).
