[edit]From Ancient Greek ἀτροφίᾱ (atrophíā), equivalent to α- (a-, “no, a-”) + τροφή (trofí, “food, nutrition”) + -ία (-ía). The Ancient sense was 'malnutrition' but the medical sense was attested even then.
