[edit]Learnedly, from Hellenistic Koine Greek πλωτάρχης (plōtárkhēs, “shipmaster”),[1] from the Ancient Greek πλωτ(ός) (plōt(ós), “navigable, floating”) + -άρχης (-árchis, suffix for leader).
