Learned borrowing from Koine Greek παραίσθησις (paraísthēsis, misperception) with semantic loan from French hallucination.[1] By surface analysis, παρ- (par-) +‎ αίσθηση (aísthisi).

  • παραίσθηση (paraísthisi) denotes a misperception of an external sensory stimulus. By contrast, ψευδαίσθηση (psevdaísthisi) denotes a hallucination arising in the mind in the absence of an external sensory stimulus.
