[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₁t- (“to shake”). Cognate with Latin quatiō (“to shake”), Proto-Celtic *kʷāti- (“chaff, husks”) (whence Old Irish cáith), and possibly Proto-Tocharian *kät- (“to strew”).[1]
