[edit]Formation similar to μολύνω (molúnō, “to stain, defile”) and φορύνω (phorúnō, “to be mingled”). Either a direct derivative of πάλη (pálē, “fine meal”) + -ύνω (-únō) or from an unattested u-stem from Proto-Indo-European *pel- (“flour, dust”).
