From Ancient Greek οἰκογεν(ής) (oikogen(ḗs), born in the house; homebred slave) + -εια (-eia)[1] or[2] as in Koine Greek οἰκογένεια (oikogéneia) with different sense "the state or verification of being a homebred slave".[3] For Medieval Greek, see φαμελιά (phameliá).
