[edit]Learned borrowing from Koine Greek κατανόη(σις) (katanóē(sis), “observation”) + -ση (-si), from κατανοέω (katanoéō) + -σις (-sis), with semantic loan from French compréhension, entendement, as well as semantic loan from English understanding.[1]
