Etymology

Calque of French serre chaude (literally hot "squeezed (space)"); by surface analysis, θερμο- (thermo-) +‎ κήπος (kípos) +‎ -ιο (-io).[1] Attested since 1856 in Katharevousa as θερμοκήπιον (thermokípion).[2]
