From Ancient Greek δρέπω (drépō), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *der- (to tear, pluck), related to Proto-Slavic *drapati (to scratch). Less certain is the relation with Proto-Germanic *trabō (fringe) and Medieval Latin drappus.
