[edit]Inherited from Byzantine Greek γρήγορος, from Hellenistic Koine Greek ἐγρήγορος (“awake”), γρηγορῶ (grēgorô), from the present perfect of Ancient Greek ἐγείρω (egeírō, “to awaken, rouse”).[1]
