Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀναιμίᾱ (anaimíā) from ἄναιμος (ánaimos, bloddless) and semantic loan from French anémie from Ancient Greek ἀναιμίᾱ (anaimíā). By surface analysis, αν- (an-, α- privative) +‎ Ancient Greek αἷμα (haîma).
