Etymology

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀμφίβολος (amphíbolos). For sense "questionable", semantic loan from French douteux. Morphologically, αμφι- (amfi-) + stem βολ- for which see αμφιβάλλω (amfivállo, Ι doubt) - αμφιβολία f (amfivolía) & βάλλω (vállo) - βολή (volí) + suffix -ος (-os).
