[edit]Learned borrowing from Koine Greek Ἀλεξάνδρεια (Alexándreia) -see adjective Ἀλεξάνδρειος (Alexándreios, “of Alexander”)- from the ancient name Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros). The Egyptian city is named for and by its founder Alexander the Great.
