Etymology

A variant, da da, which was also a pun on the Chinese word 家 (gia, “home”) in contrast with cuốc cuốc and the Chinese word 國 / 国 (quốc, “country”, as in 國家 / 国家 (quốc gia, “country; nation”)), existed in Bà Huyện Thanh Quan's poem titled Qua đèo Ngang (“Crossing the Ngang Pass”).
