Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Vietic *p-laːs (“fathom”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *laas (“to spread; to extend”) (via *plaas); cognate with Mon ပၠံး (plah, “to spread out; to extend”), Riang plɑs¹. Related to sải.
Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as 阿賴, composed of 阿 (MC 'a) + 賴 (MC lajH) (modern SV: a lại).
