[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Borrowed from Latin tropus (“figure of speech, trope”), from Ancient Greek τρόπος (trópos, “turn; figure of speech; musical mode”). The “tropics” sense (sense 1) is possibly a semantic loan from German Tropen (“tropics”). The phonetic form was probably influenced by trópus (“trope”), which was borrowed independently from the same Latin term. First attested in 1833.[1]
Noun
[edit]trópus (plural trópusok)
- (geography, often in the plural) tropics (region of the Earth lying between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn)
- (archaic, geography) tropic (either of the two parallels of latitude 23°27′ north and south of the equator)
- Synonyms: térítő, térítő kör, (archaic) naptérítő
