[edit]Inherited from Old Polish tłumaczyć, from Proto-Slavic *tъlmačiti, from *tъlmačь (“interpreter”) + *iti, borrowed from a Turkic language, from Proto-Turkic *tilmaç, cf. Turkish dilmaç (“translator, interpreter”). By surface analysis, tłumacz + -yć.
