From Proto-Finnic *sulkëdak, from Proto-Finno-Permic [Term?]. Cognate to Finnish sulkea, Karelian sulkie, Votic sulko (cold, runny nose), Erzya сёлгомс (śolgoms, to close) and Moksha сёлгомс (śolgoms, to close).
