schelvis
Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch schelvisch, from Old Dutch *skelfisc. Analyzable as schel (“peel”) + vis (“fish”), the former being a dated variant of schil. The name is due either to the relatively large scales or to the layered meat of the fish. Compare German Schellfisch.
