Etymology

From Middle Low German schellevisch, from schelle (peel, outer layer) + visch (fish), due either to the relatively large scales or to the layered meat of the fish. The former component is related to German Schale (peel), the latter is cognate to Fisch. Compare Dutch schelvis.
