Continuing Old Danish rath, from Old Norse ráð n, from Proto-Norse *ᚱᚨᛞᚨ n (*rada), either from *ᚱᚨᛞᚨᛉ m (*radaʀ) or from Proto-Germanic *rēdą n, from *rēdaz m. Cognate with Old English rǣd m (whence archaic English rede), Middle Low German rât (whence German Low German Raad), and Old High German rāt (whence German Rat m).
