Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Spanish pares, plural of par, from Latin pār (equal, like).

The term pares, referring to the beef stew, originated from the carinderia named Jonas, established in 1979 by Lolita Tiu and Roger Tiu at the corner of Mayon Street and Malindang Street, near Calle Retiro (present-day N.S. Amoranto Sr. Street), in Quezon City. The name came from the practice of pairing beef asado with sinangag (garlic fried rice) and a light beef broth, forming a complete meal.
