Etymology

mực (“inkfish → squid”) +‎ quỷ (“devil, demon, fiend”). Partial calque of English vampire squid, as vampire is also translated into Vietnamese as quỷ hút máu (lit. "blood-sucking fiend") besides ma cà rồng.

Despite the name, this cephalopod lacks an ink sac and cannot squirt ink.
