[edit]Etymology
[edit]lợn (“pig”) + lòi.
Chamberlain (2018, 2019) posits that the fossilized element lòi is cognate with Muong [Thanh Hoá] lᴐj¹, Muong [Houaphanh] lɔɒyʔ³¹, Maleng [Atel] călɑɑy.[1][2] Muong Bi lòi (“wild boar”) may also be listed among the cognates.
Certainly also received some semantic influence from lòi (“to protrude”).
