Etymology

[edit]

lợn (pig) +‎ lòi.

Chamberlain (2018, 2019) posits that the fossilized element lòi is cognate with Muong [Thanh Hoá] lᴐj¹, Muong [Houaphanh] lɔɒyʔ³¹, Maleng [Atel] călɑɑy.[1][2] Muong Bi lòi (wild boar) may also be listed among the cognates.

Certainly also received some semantic influence from lòi (to protrude).
