[edit]From a merger of:
- Middle Dutch coren (“to test, to assess”), from Old Dutch coron, from Proto-West Germanic *koʀōn. Still found in the derived form bekoren.
- Middle Dutch cueren (“to determine”), from Old Dutch *curien, from Proto-West Germanic *kuʀjan.
