From Latin hypotenusa, from Ancient Greek ὑποτείνουσα πλευρά (hupoteínousa pleurá, side subtending [the right angle]), from ὑποτείνουσα (hupoteínousa, stretching, extending, subtending), active participle of ὑποτείνω (hupoteínō, subtend, stretch under).
