Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish گوتورمك (götürmek, to carry, take away), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *köt- (to rise, to raise; high, elevated). Cognate with Azerbaijani götürmək (to take, pick up), Kazakh көтеру (köteru, to lift, raise), Kyrgyz көтөрүү (kötörüü, to rise), Turkmen götermek (to lift, pick up), Tuvan көдүрер (ködürer, to pick, rise) Uyghur كۆتەرمەك (kötermek, to pick, raise), Uzbek ko'tarmoq (to raise, heighten), and Yakut көт (köt, to fly). Related to göt (ass, buttocks).
