From Old Occitan estampir, from Gothic *𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌼𐍀𐌾𐌰𐌽 (*stampjan), from a variant form of Proto-Germanic *stampōną (“to squeeze”). Compare Old English *stampian. Doublet of estampar.
