[edit]Borrowed from Old East Slavic думати (dumati) (cf. Russian ду́мать (dúmatʹ)), apparently together with doma (“thought”) (q.v.); both words are first mentioned in 17th-century sources.[1] Compare obsolete Lithuanian dūmoti, duomoti.
