Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *dumati, origin disputed. Either a loan from Proto-Germanic *dōmijaną (to judge, think) (whence English deem) either as a direct loan or ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewh₂- (to smoke), akin to Proto-Slavic *duti (to blow, to inflate), *dymъ (smoke). For the latter compare θῡμός (thūmós, soul, emotion), occasionally also “thought, mind”. Also compare надме́нный (nadménnyj, supercilious, haughty, arrogant) as another meaning change to a mental characteristic from the same root.(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
