[edit]Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese decer (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), probably from Vulgar Latin *descidere,[1] from descendo (“dēscendere”). Doublet of the borrowing descender. Cognate with Portuguese descer and Old Spanish deçir.
