[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese amẽaçar, a variant of mẽaçar, either from mẽaça (“threat”) + -ar, or from a hypothetical Vulgar Latin *admināciāre (“to threaten”) < *mināciāre (“threaten”), from minācia (“threat”), from Latin mināciae. Cognate with English menace. Compare Catalan and Occitan amenaçar, French menacer, Galician ameazar, Italian minacciare, Romanian amenința, Sicilian amminazzari, Spanish amenazar.
