From a Vulgar Latin root *ammināciāre, *admināciāre, present active infinitive of *admināciō, < *mināciō (threaten), from minācia (threat), from the neuter plural of mināx (threatening), from minārī, present active infinitive of minor (threaten). Compare Catalan amenaçar, French menacer, Italian minacciare, Occitan amenaçar, Portuguese ameaçar, Sicilian amminazzari, Spanish amenazar.
