Descendants

Dialectal descendants are not usually listed the way you are listing them, and instead usually by setting up an alternative forms section in the main inherited lemma and giving something like {{desc|en|TERM|alts=1}}.

Northern English

Northern English is not a descendant of Standard English (based on East Midlands English) but its own separate branch of the Anglic continuum, with a closer affinity to Scots. It would be incorrect to list Northern English dialect words as descendants of (literary) English.DogOfDoom (talk) 15:48, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

If you think it should be separated and given a language code, which would work better for formatting, do so at the WT:Beer Parlor. At the moment I believe it's treated as a dialect. Either way that formatting is incorrect. Vininn126 (talk) 15:50, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

No, they have individual categories, Category:Cumbrian English and Category:Yorkshire English. Vininn126 (talk) 15:53, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Geordie is also considered a separate dialect - it's code is only to be used in etymology sections and in descendants sections. Any Geordie entries you add will be under English with a label. Vininn126 (talk) 15:57, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

So may I add it to desctrees as a subsection of English, as in:

• English: bone
  • Geordie English: byen
• Scots: bane, bean, bain
• Yola: bane

Hm, it's complicated. According to the family tree at Category:Old English language, Geordie is a descendant from Northumbrian Old English (ang-nor), in turn from Old English, but we consider it a dialect of English. I would ask at the WT:Information desk what the best way of doing what you intend to do is. Vininn126 (talk) 16:17, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
